If you’re new around here, you may think that mushrooms are not a particularly exciting topic of conversation. Sure, they’re good on pizza, but what else is there to know?
Here on our blog, we’ve frequently explored how mushroom’s myriad of health benefits is nothing short of astounding. We’ve discussed how they may be anticancer and anti-tumour, how they’re anti-mutagenic and immune-boosting. How they can help us live longer and expand our minds with their neuroprotective properties.
But there’s a difference between living longer and living fuller.
As it turns out, fungi can help with that too.
Over the centuries, people have given all sorts of wacky things the label of “aphrodisiac.” They’ve ground powders and boiled potions, consumed bugs and chewed on roots to add a little fire to the bedroom. To give their love life that “va va voom” that many of us are chasing. Unfortunately, they’ve mostly been wasting their time.
However, there is one source of sexual energy that doesn’t disappoint. It’ll add a spark in the bedroom and kick in your step.
That’s functional mushrooms.
For thousands of years, men and women have been sneaking off to the forest to search for these fabulous fruits. They consumed them by the handful and felt the powerful effects. But which mushroom will reignite your love life the most?
In this article, we’ll get down and dirty, discovering which three mushrooms most bring out our wild side.
Found throughout Asia, Reishi grows in hot and humid climes. But it’s not just the weather that’ll leave you hot under the collar. The fruiting body is a rich, rusty red – the colour of love. It is passion incarnate. It is the perfect solution for a dip in sex drive.
Around 30 to 50 percent of women and about 20 percent of men report low sex drive. While the causes are numerous, many attribute it to the stress of everyday life. Constant infections also dampen our passion. I mean, who wants to get hot and sweaty when they’re shivering and sneezing?
East Asians have been using Reishi for centuries to navigate these pitfalls of lovemaking. Holistically, it promotes anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. But it also reduces stress and anxiety. In one study, people with aches, pains, and dizziness reported greater wellbeing and reduced fatigue after just eight weeks.
According to Dr. Yumin, at Shanghai University of Traditional Medicine, red Reishi is “renowned for helping with sexual function, increasing libido and fertility.” By increasing your vitality and lowering your stress, you’ll have an outpouring of energy.
And well, that energy has to go somewhere, right?
Shiitake mushrooms are prized for culinary taste. Their earthy brown colouring and rich nutty flavour lend themselves to many dishes. But that romantic meal you just rustled up will do more than sizzle your taste buds. It’ll work wonders for your body and soul.
There are numerous anecdotal reports of people experiencing a rush of sexual energy following continual consumption of Shiitake mushrooms. But what’s the reasoning?
These potent mushrooms are known to lower blood pressure by opening up your blood vessels. As a result, they also increase blood flow downstairs. But that’s only the tip of the iceberg.
Their nutrient profile might make them incredible dietary additions, but they also contain a few ingredients to boost your libido. Shiitake mushrooms are rich in zinc, which has been shown to increase testosterone levels, thereby reducing erectile dysfunction and sending your libido into the stratosphere.
They also contain a substantial amount of niacin. Recent reports have earned the compound a reputation as the vitamin of love. It helps open blood vessels, particularly to the pelvic region. This has been shown to help men suffering from impotence.

Cordyceps (Ophiocordyceps sinensis)
Do you run out of stamina in the bedroom? Do you need a kick? A little more fuel in your sexual engine?
Well, look no further.
The Cordyceps fungus has been a focus of sexual research for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Science has shown that it improves oxygen consumption, aiding physical fitness. Plus, it strengthens the delivery of energy to your muscles. In other words, it helps you go harder for longer.
Such benefits have been known since at least the 15th century. Nyamnyi Dorje, a Tibetan physician, lauded the sexual power of Cordyceps. It “increases semen” and should be considered “a faultless treasure of an ocean of good qualities” according to his writings.
Three separate studies involving 756 people with low sex drive were given either Cordyceps or a placebo for forty days. By the end, Cordyceps had increased sexual drive by an impressive 64.8%. In another study, elderly men and women reported increased sperm survival, increased sperm count, and a significant boost to their sexual energy and libido.
Cordyceps is more than nature’s Viagra. It is a life-changing sexual enhancer. If the reports are anything to go by, you won’t need a new sex drive, just a new bed.
We do want to mention that Cordyceps is one mushroom that we do not have in our drinks, as our mushroom blend is primarily optimized for immunity. If you are looking to add some Cordyceps ‘shroom energy into your life, we recommend buying from the mushroom specialists at “Real Mushrooms,” a brand that boasts 100% pure and organic mushroom capsule and powder supplements.
